How to care for your trophy

Please reach us at mountncritterstaxidermy@yahoo.com or call 304-642-1235 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

This YouTube video is  great guide to skinning your trophy.  https://youtu.be/zGAQ_gYk7PM?si=thauySDLpYcm7L1G

Start by finding a flat surface to lay your fish on.  A cookie sheet works well if your fish will fit on one.  Line the cookie sheet with wax paper and lay the fish flat on it.  Place the cookie sheet and fish into the freezer.  Freeze solid over night.  The next day you can take the fish off the sheet and place it in a bag or vacuum seal it.  Then place the fish back in the freezer.  This is the basics for getting your fish frozen and ready to bring to me.  As for what is needed for a replica.  Take good quality pics of the fish while it is alive.  This is best because the fish will still have full color at this point  Next I'll need the length of the fish and the girth of the fish at its heaviest point.  A weight will work if you dont get a girth measurement.  Once you have the measurements and pics the fish can be released or taken home and eaten.

Depending on the species and the pose you want will dictate how you skin your animal.  Most small mammals such as bobcats and coyotes I prefer to be case skinned or skinned down the back.  If you are not comfortable with skinning, freeze the whole animal or bring it to the studio immediately.  Larger animals such as bears I prefer to be cut down the back for skinning unless  they are being skinned for a rug.  If you are unsure what you are doing or you just have questions, please call me at 304-642-1235.  Its way easier to answer questions than it is to sew up incorrect skinning.
